Today's Thoughts-Maintaining Focus

If your life is anything like mine it's full our challenges on a daily basis. One of my most recent challenges has been figuring out ways to remain positive and focused even when situations throw curveballs and negative people have a lot to say. I found Encouragement in advise that I've given clients in the past. I often encourage my clients to fill their backpacks or briefcases with realistic coping skills prior to a crisis arriving. I have them identify healthy activities supportive people to surrender themselves with.
The activities serve you in several ways 1. They get you out of your head for a while 2. The can release healthy feel good hormones and 3. They can quickly change your mood if choose carefully. A support system gives accountability and possibly an objective view or your situation. It is very import to choose carefully the individuals you allow into your support system, not everyone that's available is the correct person to allow into your inner circle. A member of your inner circle should 1. have similar value 2. Be someone that you can trust and 3. Someone that is available to you. It almost goes without saying, but I'll add one more for safe measure 4. Your support system should not be made up of anyone that is a "Negative Nancy" you know the type that never has anything positive or constructive to say.
I've had to re identify activities that improve my mood and add depth to my list of activities. In the past calling a friend would do it for me, but now I have grown to not rely on others to pull me from a slump. An old fashion jam session still is one of the most effective on top of my list. You know throw on your favorite upbeat jams and dancing like no one is looking :)
My support system is a carefully guarded select few. These people believe what I believe and are dedicated to their and my personal growth. These are also people who have walked their talk all while dealing with challenges themselves. Lastly, be willing to give of yourself even when there is no direct return. The absolute quickest most sure fire way to improve your mood and regain focus is to give/do something good for someone else...

Silent Killer

From my heart... Being a mental health professional I hear people talk about depression and mental illness all day everyday. I read the statistics and reports about the "system" failing individuals quite frequently, But, when tragedy hits close to home it can be a LOUD  wake-up call! It's hard for me to understand the fact that mental illness is still a taboo thing. I personally don't understand why it's not a more discussed topic, why there aren't enough resources and access to treatment. Here in the US we have option after option for physical healthcare. If you don't like a physician for whatever reason all you have to do is walk across the hall or drive across the street and there are at least 10 more for the choosing. Why aren't there just as many easy options for mental healthcare treatment?  These day there is a checklist for "warning signs" for every ailment out there and I want to be sure that depression warning signs are top of mind...
