Hello hello everyone,
Today's topic is releasing. I would imagine that everyone everywhere has at least one or two times in their life that they can recall making a bad decision. It's one of the things that makes us all human. What we choose to do next with that decision is what determines if and how that decision will continue to have power over us. Each individual must decide to either 1. Rehearse and relive that bad decision over and over, each time experiencing the pain or disappointment that came with it or 2. Figure out a way to acknowledge and release that bad decision and move on. Most of us would say that the obvious answer is number 2, but how many of us actually follow through with the obvious choice in this case???
The first step in acknowledging and releasing is to decide if you truly want to move on or not. If you are getting some type of benefit from holding on to the pain then it may be harder to let it go. For most people it's difficult to admit that there is a benefit in continuing to feel hurt by the actions or words of another person. Example: If my boyfriend breaks up with me and breaks my heart and instead of dealing with the pain and releasing the negative emotions I choose to distrust and judge every man that enters my life from that point on. I could justify my actions by saying at least I won't get hurt again, this would be an attempt to protect my heart, my benefit is the elimination of the potential risk of experiencing hurt again. Also, a common fear of letting go of offenses is the belief that the person who committed the offence will go unpunished for their action. But as believers in The Word of God it is not our duty to punish.
A healthier approach would be to acknowledge the offense and the fear of just letting it go. Visualize yourself free of the burden of the offense. See yourself no longer playing the event over and over in your mind. Think about what opportunities and how much emotional energy you would regain by no longer dragging around thoughts that do not serve you!
The key to getting over a bad decision is to place your focus on something else, something that brings you joy. We attract to us whatever we place our focus on. Pick a happy memory and replay that memory over and over in your mind. Each time your thoughts wonder to the offense, choose to replay the happy memory. Let yourself daydream about a future happy event or experience or simply find an activity or hobby that you enjoy to participate in instead of thinking about the bad choice that you once made. Don't let your past dictate your future!
