I Dare You!

Have you ever noticed the number of times a day that negative words exit your mouth in one day? Maybe not. Recently I participated in a challenge to not complain for an entire day. Talk about difficult, I found myself feeling awkwardly quiet  around groups of people that I normal have lots to talk about with.
This was a rude awakening for me, I had always considered myself to be an overall positive person… Time for some quality self evaluation. So I set some ground rules for myself 1. No discussion of problems without a solution to accompany the problem 2. No discussion of a problem that has already been discussed and 3. Removing myself from any environments where mass complaining is being conducted. (Easier said than done)
Let me say that being faithful to my own rules was a challenge! At first it felt disingenuous like I wasn’t being honest about my feelings. As I began to develop a habit of finding a solution before speaking on a topic the uneasy feeling was relieved and replaced with unexpected feelings of optimism.  I also learned that perception plays a major role in how we deal with “issues” in life. If we have already decided that a situation is a “problem” then negative thoughts and negative emotions are sure to follow, if not interrupted. The same is true for optimistic thoughts if the situation is looked at as a challenge or a mystery that can be solved you’re more likely to be motivated to achieve a resolution. All while feeling better about the process.
It all comes back to the choice of thoughts we allow ….with that being said I dare you to take the no complaining challenge for a day! Let me know how it goes

Silent Killer

From my heart... Being a mental health professional I hear people talk about depression and mental illness all day everyday. I read the statistics and reports about the "system" failing individuals quite frequently, But, when tragedy hits close to home it can be a LOUD  wake-up call! It's hard for me to understand the fact that mental illness is still a taboo thing. I personally don't understand why it's not a more discussed topic, why there aren't enough resources and access to treatment. Here in the US we have option after option for physical healthcare. If you don't like a physician for whatever reason all you have to do is walk across the hall or drive across the street and there are at least 10 more for the choosing. Why aren't there just as many easy options for mental healthcare treatment?  These day there is a checklist for "warning signs" for every ailment out there and I want to be sure that depression warning signs are top of mind...
