2 Quick Tricks That Will Improve Your Mood Immediately

I can almost guarantee that each of us at some point has wanted to shake off an ill mood that just wouldn't go away. You know, those times when a co-worker has gotten on your last nerve or the children just won't settle down.
My first go to is music. You're likely thinking yea yea yea, but seriously. If you take a couple of focused seconds to put together a playlist of songs that bring back really great memories or songs that make you want to bust a grove (ie dance ) lol. Most of us have several playlist saved on our mobile devices anyways, so why not make one more? These are examples of what I have saved: Kids, worship, dance, creative and wake up! So depending on what mojo I need to cultivate I select the appropriate playlist.

The second go to method I recommend is time tested aromatherapy. Aromatherapy has been used since ancient times and in my opinion anything that has been around that long and is still being used can provide us with tons valuable information. Modern day scientist tell us that scent affects several areas of our brain which control memory, alertness and mood.
Do you remember those hilarious Herbal Essence commercials from back in the day or the more recently the Axe commercials that suggest smell will make you more attractive or desirable? Two humorous examples of the power of scent :)
Personally I prefer using a burner with incense or essential oils. In my office I use a warmer and melt the wax scented wax cubes or mix some essential oil with coconut oil and place it in the warmer.

My top 3 favorites to improve my mood are Lemongrass, Peppermint and Cinnamon. Try any of these or experiment with your own favorite scents to elevate your mood without using food!

Silent Killer

From my heart... Being a mental health professional I hear people talk about depression and mental illness all day everyday. I read the statistics and reports about the "system" failing individuals quite frequently, But, when tragedy hits close to home it can be a LOUD  wake-up call! It's hard for me to understand the fact that mental illness is still a taboo thing. I personally don't understand why it's not a more discussed topic, why there aren't enough resources and access to treatment. Here in the US we have option after option for physical healthcare. If you don't like a physician for whatever reason all you have to do is walk across the hall or drive across the street and there are at least 10 more for the choosing. Why aren't there just as many easy options for mental healthcare treatment?  These day there is a checklist for "warning signs" for every ailment out there and I want to be sure that depression warning signs are top of mind...
